Luis Dominguez, the systems and electrical lead for assembly, test, and launch operations, is usually based at JPL but has been working full time at the Cape since early June. Then, in mid-August, a crew will begin slowly loading all 2,392 pounds (1,085 kilograms) of propellant – the neutral gas xenon – onto the spacecraft over the course of a couple weeks. Later in July, they will integrate and test the deployment of the enormous solar arrays. The team recently finished several weeks of functional testing of the science instruments as well as the spacecraft hardware and software.Īfter removing the last of the cables that snake around the hardware for testing, they’ll “close out” the spacecraft by reinstalling some exterior panels that had been removed for access and complete the thermal blanketing. Next Stepsīut first, a team of 30 or so engineers and technicians will wrap up the assembly, test, and launch operations phase of the mission. Once the spacecraft reaches Psyche in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, it will spend at least 26 months orbiting the asteroid, gathering images and other data that will tell scientists more about its history and what it is made of. Thank you for helping us and making our only full day in Huntsville magical.Measuring about 173 miles (279 kilometers) at its widest point, the asteroid Psyche presents a unique opportunity to explore a metal-rich body that may be part of a core of a planetesimal, the building block of an early planet. All 3 women embodied what you think of when us people from New Jersey hear about "Southern Hospitality." As we say in NJ, Julie, Linda and Laura, youse guys are the best. They also replaced my small paper bag that was falling apart with a sturdier bag and gave my son an additional gift. They said it was family friendly and that they really thought my son would love it there. They found literature for me when I mentioned wanting to see caverns and informed me the lost luggage store would be a great stop on the way to the caverns - information I'd never have known on my own. Linda R and Laura spent quality time with us upon our return as they saw my interest in exploring other parts of Alabama should we be fortunate enough to return for another year at Space Camp. There were plenty of places to take bathroom breaks and get snacks and water along the way. ![]() The weather held out and my 11 year old son enjoyed the whole thing (really!). We explored multiple museum grounds, walked over the beautiful bridge (I don't want to give too much away) and logged many steps closing our exercise rings and meeting our Apple Watch move goals. We also encountered others doing the hunt and we helped each other. Natives often excitedly approached us offering help. We stopped and explored the old hardware store now owned by the historical society, we walked the water trail spotting the hard to find duck (it really is there), and we read a lot of history as we cheated on Google. The Cozy Cow is towards the end and we loved it. We saw more of Huntsville than we ever would have. The hunt was the absolute best activity my son and I could have done. They even let me take a prize too they must have seen how much I wanted one when I saw what it was. Off we went and FOUR hours later we came full circle back to the Visitor Center where Linda R and Laura cheered when they saw we had the Lucky Duck form completed in hand. I am so glad she did this as the map was helpful in completing the hunt. I turned back onto Cleveland and there was Julie, running out to me with map of Downtown. We headed out, found our first duck, but realized I walked the wrong way. She pointed us in the direction to start and even gave us a clue to get us going. ![]() Gave us confidence that we could complete the hunt within the time we had (we started out at noon and the center closed at 5). Told us to get ice cream at the Cozy Cow (best advice ever) 3. We could complete the Lucky Duck Hunt without a car 2. She was beyond helpful assuring me that 1. My son and I arrived and I think we were greeted first by Julie, (the employee with the British accent). I picked up the flyer, but really didn't know what it was so I thought starting at the Visitor Center would be best. We also have to spend all day traveling back home and to me, walking outside seemed like a better choice. I had no idea what to do, but spending all day in a museum, after my son had been inside most of the week due to heavy rain, seemed unadventurous. We had free entry into the Rocket Museum on the day of camp pick up, and we spent the entire day there, which was awesome, but we didn't want to be inside another museum. I was picking my son up from Space Camp and we had an extra day to see the city. Our hotel had a brochure for the Lucky Duck Scavenger Hunt. Julie, Linda R and Laura started and ended our day in Huntsville with kindness and great customer service.
